In Gen Z, the rate increases to 81%, with 55% of doomscrolling happening before bedtime, which is a time characterized by lower visual recovery and greater neurological sensitivity.

As per the research done by National Geographic, the stress response of the brain is activated when exposed repeatedly to crisis-based content, thereby increasing cortisol and adrenaline levels. When near focus and emotional arousal are prolonged, the blinks per minute drastically reduce from an average of 15 blinks per minute to as low as 3-4 blinks per minute, a staggering 60-75% decrease. Dry eye syndrome is likely when the tear film is unstable, as per the research conducted by Nebraska Medicine and PMC.

As per the Reddit forums, including r/ADHD, r/nosurf, r/simpleliving, and r/eyefloaters, the common consensus among the members is the loss of hours due to doomscrolling, followed by burning, vision issues, headaches, and an inability to sleep. As per the r/eyefloaters community, members specifically mention late-night doomscrolling as a cause of increased symptoms. As per the r/ADHD community, members specifically mention the inability to recognize eye discomfort until the point when the discomfort becomes unbearable.

As per the clinical research done and published in Frontiers in Psychology, anxiety increases the perception of physical symptoms, thereby increasing the intensity of discomfort when visually consuming emotionally negative content.

Eye care specialists explain that the eye itself isn’t being structurally damaged by doomscrolling. What’s happening is functional overload. Stress prevents people from blinking, the screen dries out the eyes, and the brain overreacts to pain. People think that something’s wrong with their eyes, but what’s really happening is that their eyes aren’t getting a rest.

Short-Form Video Reels (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)

Currently, as of 2025, TikTok has surpassed 1.59 billion users, and Instagram has reached 2 billion users, with Meta stating that “nearly 50% of Instagram’s overall time spent is spent watching reels.” From a medical standpoint, the visual hazard of reels is not the screen but the pattern of viewing, which forces the viewer not to blink and instead to micro-squint due to the high contrast and rapid scene changes.

Ophthalmologists and optometrists have begun to note an increase in eye strain from viewing reels, especially among younger people. Ophthalmology Times also cites warnings from medical professionals about increased dry eye, headaches, and temporary blurring, attributed to viewing short-form videos. On the Reddit forums such as r/nosurf, users have shared their experiences of “losing hours” to viewing reels and having “burning eyes,” “pressure behind the eyes,” and “trouble focusing” afterward.

“We regularly hear patients say, ‘I wasn’t working; I was just scrolling.’ Well, from the eye’s point of view, there’s no difference. The visual system only registers sustained near focus and reduced blinking,” the optometrists of Overnight Glasses explain.

Reading is still one of the most beneficial activities for our brains, but the modern culture of reading is increasingly pushing us towards binge-style near work. Social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are promoting readathons, which are essentially 12-24-hour-long challenges of uninterrupted near work.

From a clinical point of view, our eyes don’t differentiate between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ near work. Our eyes are subjected to the same amount of strain whether we are engaged in reading literature or scrolling through our social media feeds.

The research team reveals, “The problem is, we see patients who are proud of finishing a 24-hour readathon and coming in days later with burning, blurry vision.

The problem is not the reading; the problem is the lack of consideration for the physiological limits of our eyes.”

According to research from the NIH, PubMed, and Myopia Profile, prolonged near vision is a risk factor for myopia and contributes to dry eye symptoms. The proximity of the screen (24 cm vs. 40-50 cm for books) and the stronger inhibition of blinking make it an even more significant factor. Video gaming differs from passive screen time in that it is a visually intense task that requires rapid processing, constant tracking, and increased attention, which reduces blinking rate.

According to Overnight Glasses’s research team, gamers don’t feel tired because their adrenaline levels are very high. So, the eyes become tired long before the gamer notices it.

The American Optometric Association indicates that “50-90 percent of computer screen users experience computer vision syndrome,” and children who are 6-7 years old and have a gaming time of more than 3 hours a day are almost four times as likely to become myopic as those who have little time spent in front of a screen.”

Driving

Data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s American Driving Survey indicates that the average time-exposure data of U.S. drivers is 60.7 minutes per day, with many drivers regularly exceeding 2 hours of continuous driving on high-travel days. At a population level, this amounts to 95 billion hours of driving per year, making visual exposure a routine rather than an exceptional condition.

Research in ophthalmology and human performance suggests that reaction time, attention, and visual comfort are significantly reduced after about 2 hours of uninterrupted driving, even in the absence of subjective sleepiness (ScienceDirect). Night driving further exacerbates the condition due to oncoming headlights.

“Drivers tend not to realize the level of their own visual fatigue, as they’re not looking at a screen,” the eye care specialists team says. “But the eyes are constantly working, especially at night.”

The clinical risk factors that may arise due to prolonged driving include the following, which occur simultaneously due to tear evaporation, glare exposure, and constant focus on distant objects:

Final Clinical Note

The visual burden, not the behavior itself, is the damaging factor in all visual behaviors. If the visual burden is interrupted, allowing recovery time, the visual system can accommodate screens, reading, and focusing. Contemporary lifestyles do not permit interruptions.

The most effective structural treatments, in terms of clinical results, are those that interrupt the visual behaviors, allowing the visual system to reset. Symptoms resolve in a matter of days.
